Gostiny Dvor

Stretching over 280 m (920ft) along Nevsky Prospect is the building of Gostiny Dvor, St.-Petersburg’s largest department store, designed by the same architect Rastrelli, who built the Winter Palace. Although recently a lot of new and probably larger malls have been opened in the city, none can compare to the gallery of Gostiny Dvor, which currently houses more than 300 shops, ranging from boutiques of haute couture to small shops, counters and stalls. Measuring over 1 km (0,5 mile in circumference), this enormous two-storey building was a centre of commerce, deriving is name from the word gost, which in Old Russian meant ‘merchant’. One of the world’s first indoor shopping malls, Gostiny Dvor has a competitor just opposite it: the stylish Passazh. But beware the pickpockets in either place!
